The Pillars

Time. Technique. Tone.

01 — Time

Time

The drummer's core responsibility.
We study it, internalize it, and learn to own it. From the simplicity of a steady beat to more complex layers of rhythm and feel. Working on time is a lifelong journey.

02 — Technique

Technique

The how of drumming.
We study how the body moves so students can play efficiently, stay injury free, and develop a reliable set of skills at the instrument. Anyone can hit a drum. Learning to hit it properly is where the real work begins.

03 — Tone

Tone

The actual sound you produce.
Part of our work together is learning how to listen with "big ears." That listening develops taste, and taste, backed by solid technique and a strong sense of time, delivers an intentional sound. Listeners might not understand what you're doing, but they will feel it.

About Matt Cordier

Working musician
since 1999.

  • BGS in Music and Dance, Northern Illinois University
  • Teaching privately since 1999
  • Elementary Music Teacher, Holy Nativity School
  • Decades of performing across styles and stages
  • Active musician in the Honolulu music scene

I've been a working musician since 1999. Over the past two decades, I've performed hundreds of shows on stages from New York to Chicago to Taiwan, accompanied thousands of dance classes, even went on a handful of tours, and learned countless lessons. I've been part of the grind for decades, and I love it.

I didn't start with much natural talent on the drums, but what I have I owe to the great teachers in my life. They taught me how to learn, and that changed everything.

I studied music and dance at Northern Illinois University from 1995 to 1999, and that path led to over a decade of accompanying master dance teachers in their classes. Working with them not only refined my musicianship, they also showed me how to deeply observe a student and make the right correction at the right time.

Now, I'm the music teacher at Holy Nativity School in ʻĀina Haina, where I teach about 130 students each week. Here, I've come to better understand how kids process information, what keeps them engaged, and how to challenge them in just the right ways.

I've been teaching privately since 1999 and now share my love of drums with students at Current School of Drumming.
